Coffee is a beverage which is a daily part of almost everyone’s lives. The moment people get up in the morning, they need a cup of brashly brewed coffee to wake them up without which their day goes by in an awful way. Coffee helps in fully waking up a person and makes them ready to go after the days work. With the upcoming of many new coffee shops, choosing a coffee which you want to make your ‘regular’ has become quite a tough decision to make.

Even though coffee is loved so much, no one ever wonders as to exactly how coffee is made. Some people buy coffee roasting machines and roast and brew coffee at home. This is done by purchasing green coffee beans and then roasting them in the roasting machines. Roasting coffee beans at home is a process which has been taking place in people’s homes for many centuries and has evolved with time. An important fact about roasted coffee is that once coffee has been roasting, it is usually only good for about a month after which it loses its strength and flavor.

The Western consumers may be very familiar with coffee and its different brands but no one knows as to how coffee actually comes to the stage which people drink. Most people assume that coffee is found in the shape of a bean however this is not true, Coffee berries are grown and the seed undergoes multiples stages after which it becomes the roasted coffee which many of us know.

The process of making coffee is quite lengthy and tiresome. The coffee beans are first picked by hand after which the flesh is removed using a machine manufactured especially for this purpose. The seed inside these berries is what makes up the green coffee bean. The seed is washed and any dirt and filth which might exist is removed. The seed is then washed once more with water after which it is dried and separated.

The next process which takes place is the roasting. The coffee which is found in the supermarkets ready for our consumption has already been roasted before hand. Even if it is not sold pre-roasted, any coffee which is used is roasted prior to being consumed. The roasting of the coffee takes place in a coffee roasting machine which may have an effect on the flavor, taste and strength of the coffee. The roasting process changes the shape of the coffee bean as well.

The roasting of the coffee bean starts when the temperature inside the coffee bean reaches to about 200 degrees centigrade. However different beans differ in their moisture content and their density. Due to this, each coffee bean roasts at various temperatures.

Since coffee is roasted, it has different grades to it. These consist of unroasted which is also known as ‘green’, light, cinnamon, medium, high, city, full city, Italian and French. The coffee is labeled as either of the above based on what the color of the bean turns out as. Despite the interesting way coffee is roasted, people have stopped roasting coffee at home through coffee roasting machines as it is probably more convenient to buy readymade coffee from the market.
